Life
By Sobron Aidit
life does not depend on some external force
it must be grasped by we who live
it bears fruit that grows from within
ripening slowly but never for a moment still
life is as vast as the raging seas
but it flows not on its own, it must be steered
advancing towards an objective
firmly and accurately aimed
life is a vast flood of water
green and blue, its depth can be gauged
not veiled in mystery but with fineries interwoven
and things that are important for you and me.

Poem Analysis:
Sobron Aidit's poem Life presents a contemplative exploration of the nature of existence, emphasizing the importance of agency, purpose, and self-determination. Through vivid metaphors and a rhythmic structure, Aidit articulates a vision of life that is both dynamic and deeply personal.
The Concept of Agency
From the outset, the poem establishes the notion that life is not something passively experienced or dictated by external forces. The line “life does not depend on some external force” asserts a powerful declaration of individual agency, suggesting that one must take an active role in shaping their existence. This emphasis on self-empowerment is further reinforced by the phrase “it must be grasped by we who live,” implying that true understanding and fulfillment come from within rather than from outside influences.
This theme of agency is central to the poem’s message. Aidit suggests that life is not a predetermined path but rather a journey that individuals must navigate, make choices, and face challenges. This perspective encourages readers to embrace their responsibilities and take control of their destinies, positioning them as active participants in their own lives.
The Nature of Life as Growth
Aidit employs the metaphor of fruit to convey the idea that life bears results from internal development. The line “it bears fruit that grows from within” highlights the importance of personal growth, suggesting that true fulfillment comes from nurturing one’s own potential. The idea that this growth occurs “ripening slowly but never for a moment still” captures the dynamic nature of life, emphasizing that while growth may take time, it is a continuous process.
This metaphor resonates with the reader’s understanding of life as a journey of self-discovery, where experiences, challenges, and reflections contribute to one’s development. The notion of ripening also implies that the fruit of life is not instantaneous but requires patience, perseverance, and care. This further reinforces the idea that individuals must actively engage with their own growth to reap the rewards of their efforts.
Life as a Journey with Purpose
In the second stanza, Aidit expands on the concept of life as a journey, likening it to “vast as the raging seas.” This imagery evokes a sense of adventure and unpredictability, suggesting that life is filled with both challenges and opportunities. The phrase “but it flows not on its own, it must be steered” underscores the importance of direction and intention in navigating one’s life.
The use of the word “advancing” implies a proactive approach to living, emphasizing that individuals must set goals and work toward them with determination. The idea of aiming “firmly and accurately” further suggests that clarity of purpose is essential for a meaningful existence. Aidit encourages readers to reflect on their own objectives and consider the paths they are taking to achieve them.
The Depth of Life's Experience
In the final stanza, Aidit continues to develop the metaphor of water, describing life as “a vast flood of water.” This imagery not only conveys the abundance and richness of life but also hints at its complexity and unpredictability. The description of life as “green and blue, its depth can be gauged” suggests that while life may be intricate, it is not entirely opaque; rather, it can be understood and appreciated.
The phrase “not veiled in mystery but with fineries interwoven” indicates that life is filled with beauty and meaning, shaped by the experiences and connections we create. The emphasis on “things that are important for you and me” personalizes the poem, reinforcing the idea that the significance of life is found in the relationships we forge and the values we uphold. This collective aspect of existence highlights the interconnectedness of human experience, inviting readers to consider their place within a larger community.
